Your baby will love going out to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air during spring and summer months, but your little one’s delicate skin will need extra protection.
As a baby’s skin is thin and delicate, it can easily be sunburnt which can lead to long term damage.
Sunburn is not only painful for your baby, but stressful for you as a parent.
Soothing your baby’s sunburned skin
If your baby does get sunburn, there are ways to soothe the pain;
- Cool the affected area with a cold, wet washcloth for 15 minutes a few times a day until the redness disappears.
- Apply an aloe-vera gel or a mild hypoallergenic moisturizer to soothe the skin.
- Consult a doctor if the sunburn is serious.
Prevention is better than treatment
Prevention is always better than treatment. Here are a few tips from Badger to prevent sunburns;
- Try to keep your little one out of direct sunlight especially between 11am and three pm, when the sun is at its strongest.
- When in the sun, your little one should always be wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect his face, neck and ears.
- Dress your little one in lightweight clothes made of tightly woven fabric, like cotton, as this provides the best protection.
- Ensure that you baby’s shoulders are covered as they are particularly vulnerable in the summer.
It might be difficult to keep your inquisitive babies and adventurous children in the shade most of the time. It is therefore essential to always apply, and re-apply, a high factor waterproof sunblock.
