Myang (pronounced “me-yang’) is a proudly South African producer of delightful, hand-made baby shoes and accessories, known for its distinctive fun and striking designs.
Founded in 2012, Myang has become a burgeoning business with an ever-expanding range of products that has received international attention. Founder of Myang, Sarah Massey-Hicks says, “At Myang we are driven by the love of little things – especially the little creatures who occupy such a large space in our hearts.”
Myang products are lovingly designed and handcrafted by an all-women team based in Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape. Many of the women employed by the project come from disadvantaged communities for which Myang hopes to make a small difference.
Community upliftment
Employees are given materials and training to create handmade clothing and toys for the Myang label from home – allowing them to continue caring for their families while earning an income.
The unique Myang designs caught the attention of seasoned local entrepreneur, Margi Sheard, who says, “I have always had a desire to become involved in upliftment projects for women so I felt that this was the perfect opportunity.”
Myang products are aimed at kids between the ages of 0 and 24 months and range from shoes, blankets and sun hats to soft toys, crocheted beanies and other accessories.
Uniquely South African
“A firm favourite is our range of cuddly baby blankets, hand-embroidered and appliqued with motifs,” says Massey-Hicks, adding that the handmade soft toys are a recent addition and have already become the favourite companions of many little ones.
The extensive range of Myang baby shoes and boots make the perfect first shoes for boys and girls for any season. The fabric and trims are truly unique while the non-slip suede soles add extra comfort. “We hope that the love of our craft – and of our little customers – shows in every design, stitch, texture and pattern, bringing great delight,” says Massey-Hicks.
Looking ahead, Sheard says, “As we seek new markets and expand and grow as a business, we will continue to develop local talent and skills. We believe this is integral to achieving the dreams and aspirations of all involved in Myang.”
