Many moms spend hours talking to other moms, visiting paediatricians and trawling the internet in search of one thing: answers to their baby’s sleep problems.
Here are the answers to some of the most common questions asked by tired (and somewhat desperate) moms:
From what age can I expect my child to “sleep through the night”?
This differs widely from child to child but children can sleep a good eight solid hours from as young as 12 weeks, and “sleep through the night” around four months (or even sooner). But, this depends on your child, his nourishment needs and other factors.
I’ve read that certain blankets, bath products and toys can help a baby sleep. Is this true?
No special cream, special diet, special sleep blanket or taglet, or any other sleep “product” will on its own, help your baby to sleep well. Although these products might comfort your baby, they are just a tool in a toolbox when used in isolation. Don’t waste your money products that promise sleep…
My child wakes up crying in the middle of the night and screams for hours. Surely he’s in pain?
More often than not, children wake up at night screaming because they are tired and don’t know how to go back to sleep.
My nurse advised sedative medicine to help my child sleep. Is that a good idea?
Giving your child medication will not solve their sleeping problems. You can’t keep giving them medication for the rest of their lives. There’s no time like the present to tackle their sleeping problems – the sooner, the better.
My child is still only a few months old. Surely she will grow out of her sleep problems?
Children do not grow out of their sleep problems Studies have shown that young problem sleepers continue to be problem sleepers in future.
