SIDS: The essential MUST KNOWS to prevent cot death

OCTOBER IS INTERNATIONAL S.I.D.S AWARENESS MONTH

What is SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)?

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, otherwise known as ‘cot death’, is the leading cause of death in newborn babies with thousands of mortalities reported each year. The exact cause of SIDS remains unknown. What we do know is that at some point, babies simply stop breathing. A global initiative led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) offers practical advice with the ‘Back to Sleep, Tummy for Play’ campaign. This continues to reduce the number of infant mortalities ascribed to SIDS, but awareness needs to remain constant, particularly while research into the cause/s is on-going.

Essential MUST KNOWS to reduce the risk of cot death (WHO Guidelines):

  • Always put baby to sleep on their back (tummy for play)
  • Do not overdress baby – ensure baby is not too warm
  • Keep your baby’s cot free of soft fluffy blankets and toys, and be sure to use a firm mattress that does not “give” under your baby’s weight
  • Avoid bed sharing with your baby, particularly if you sleep very deeply or have taken alcohol, or medication that induces drowsiness
  • Do not (ever) smoke around your child

What else can help?

Snuza Portable Baby Monitors do not claim that they can prevent SIDS, but–the Snuza Hero can detect the silent rise and fall of a baby’s abdomen. The Snuza Hero gives parents peace of mind by sounding an alarm when the abdominal movement associated with a baby’s breathing stops.

The Snuza Hero clips onto the front of baby’s nappy, and has a sensitive and flexible rubber tip that gently rests on baby’s tummy. The Hero detects even the slightest abdominal movement and will sound an alarm if a baby’s abdominal movements are very weak or fall to less than eight movements per minute. If no abdominal movement is detected for 15 seconds, the Snuza Hero will vibrate to rouse the baby. If movement still does not resume after 5 seconds, an alarm sounds as a call for intervention. There are no wires, no cords, no cables – perfect for busy moms on the go.
