If this is your first pregnancy, those first movements may be easy to dismiss as gas or a rumbling stomach. But as soon as you detect a pattern to those rumbles and bubbles, you will know that it is your baby confirming his presence.
Every pregnancy is different
Each mom-to-be and each pregnancy is different. If this is your first pregnancy, you might feel movement later than another woman who is pregnant with her second or third baby – as they will know what to expect.
Although your baby has been wriggling from as early as eight weeks, most first time moms only confirm feeling movement at 20 weeks. However, if you pay close attention, you may start to feel the first flutters from 16 weeks.
Quickening
The first flutters that you feel is known as Quickening. The best way to describe these flutters would be to compare it to the nervous sensation that you get before writing a test or presenting a speech. Many first time moms overlook this feeling as indigestion or gas.
Other moms describe their baby’s first movements as being similar to popcorn popping or a bubbling sensation.
When will movement be felt from the outside?
Those magical first few movements will be like a secret between you and your baby. While your baby is actively punching, kicking and rolling several times throughout the day, these movements will only be felt much later by an outsider such as your partner.
Will the movement be painful?
No. The movement you feel might be a little strange, but not at all painful. It is only later, as your baby takes up more room in your abdomen that movement might become uncomfortable and at times, painful.
Savour those first few movements that your baby makes. After all, there is no better feeling than the confirmation of a little life growing inside of you.
