Anticipating your baby is an exciting time, however spending time at the labour offices (trying to get all documents in order to successfully lodge a UIF claim) is no walk in the park, yet this is an important part of your maternity leave.
Here is some important information to bear in mind…
When should I start?
The best time to start the UIF process is around six months into your pregnancy. It can take a while to gather all the required information so the sooner you start, the better (its best not to leave it too late).
The deadline for claiming is six months from the birth of your baby, thereafter your benefits are forfeited.
When can I claim?
If you contribute toward UIF and are not be paid a full salary, you can claim Maternity UIF. If you miscarry in the third trimester, legally adopt a baby or resign while pregnant, you are also entitled to claim.
You cannot claim if;
- You will be paid in full for the entire duration of your maternity leave
- If you’ve previously claimed for illness, retrenchment or unemployment within the last 4 years.
How long will it take to pay out?
Once an application is submitted, it can take up to six weeks for approval, at which time you will then receive your first payment. Thereafter, you will have to go to the labour office monthly to sign for your follow up payments.
How much can I expect to receive?
You can expect between 38%-58% of your salary. There is a ceiling salary of R14200. If your company is paying you a portion, you will not receive more than a 100% of your salary from the UIF and your employer combined. The UIF pays for a maximum of four months based on how long you’ve been contributing towards the fund.
