Claiming UIF is an important part of your Maternity leave. Once you have submitted your UIF claim, it can take up to six weeks for approval, at which time you will then receive your first payment. Thereafter, you will have to go to the labour office monthly to sign for your follow up payments.
Currently, many South Africans are not being paid claims on time, with approval taking longer than the prescribed six weeks.
UIF Aid, a South African agency that manages UIF claims on behalf of applicants, shares its insight into the backlog.
Glitches in the new online system
The Labour department has developed a new online system. Since the beginning of 2014, all offices have been using this system. Unfortunately, the system has a lot of glitches, which is resulting in delayed payment of benefits.
How the new system works
The UIF has already come up with new policies and procedures to incorporate the new system. With this new system, claims are handed into the offices throughout Gauteng.
However, the information is being processed at the Pretoria head office.
Since they are dealing with the whole of Gauteng and Pretoria’s claims and processing of information, this is causing a huge backlog.
Speed up the process from your side
What applicants can do from their side to speed up the process is to ensure that ALL employers have emailed UI19′s with accompanying letters (if requested) to [email protected].
Also ensure that your employers have listed correct contact numbers (where they can be reached) on the UI19 as the UIF usually calls employers to confirm employment. If they cannot get a hold of your employer, your file is simply put aside until they are able to reach your employers.
